Ratindra Das Dynamic Design in Watercolor Feb 16-18, 2011 9:30-4:00 p.m. $225
Ratindra Das will teach a workshop in designing dynamic watercolor paintings at the Artist’s Showplace Gallery. He is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society and holds Master status in the Transparent Watercolor Society. He is also a signature member of six other national watercolor societies. He attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago. He is one of the twenty-six artists selected from the US to exhibit in the 1st Invitational Exhibition of Contemporary International Watermedia Masters in Nanjing, China and has been appointed as Honorary Member of the Jiangsu Watercolor Research Institute. He is a popular workshop instructor and frequent juror of shows and competitions. He has been featured in ten books and several magazines and has produced a workshop video, “Painting a Personal Reality in Watercolor." Ratindra Das' workshop will focus on how to use photographs creatively to create a personal reality, while incorporating his six guidelines on design.
Emphasis will be placed on how to design interesting shapes. “In most cases my paintings hardly resemble the photographs. Exaggerate, lie, add, delete, change , do anything to make the subject interesting and personal", says Ratindra Das. Participants will learn to design many paintings from one photograph and will be captivated by his use of exciting color to give meaning to his painting. Register for this workshop by mailing your $75 non-refundable, non-transferable deposit to Artists’ Showplace Gallery, 15615 Coit Rd., #230 Dallas, TX 75248, or with a credit card by calling Artists’ Showplace at 972-233-1223. Workshop spaces are reserved in the order the deposit is received. Deposit is refunded if the workshop is canceled. Ratindra Das' Suggested Supply list: PAPER: 140# cold press D’Arches ( professional grade) , DO NOT BUY CHEAP PAPERS. Alternate brands are Kilimanjaro (available from Cheap Joes) Lana, Winsor & Newton , Saunders, Richeson. For a three day workshop half sheets are OK. But I encourage using full sheets.
PAPER SUPPORT: A Gatorboard is my choice. 1/8" thick painted masonite cut to about 1/2" larger than paper size.Apply 3 or more coats of white paint on both sides on masonite. Any house paint will do. Plexiglass is a good substitute...I apply a coat of paint to Gatorboard as well. It adds a bit to its life. Homasote board, or plywood WILL NOT work for some of the procedures that will be explored. Unpainted masonite board will absorb moisture too quickly and unevenly. It is not recommended. DO NOT STAPLE OR TAPE YOUR PAPER ON BOARD IN ADVANCE. PALETTE: Do not bring little inexpensive plastic palettes. You will be using a lot of paint. BRUSHES: A good 1” flat ,( Isabey 6421 series, Grumbacher Aquarelle #6142, or Morilla #202, or Robert Simmons Skyflow ) and a #10 or 12 round.1/2” flat brush is very useful. A Rigger or Liner #6 (Frank Webb Liner from Cheap Joes) will be used for lines and calligraphy. My favorites are Isabey 1”, a round #12 (unknown manufacturer from India) mongoose brush. SKETCHING PENCIL: 6B square end, or soft woodless pencil 9B (softest you can find) SKETCHING PAPER: Ordinary bond copying paper, or plain scratch pad. MISCELLANEOUS: - Cellulose sponge large
- Rags, a discarded terry towel
- Clips (bulldog spring type)
- Wide mouth plastic water container
- Natural cosmetic sponge( sea sponge)
- Kleenex tissues, paper towel
- Easel
I work mostly by keeping the board nearly vertical, and tilt it at various angles . I use a half size French easel. If you don’t have one, you may modify a camera tripod to improvise a compact easel. COLORS: DO NOT TAKE PAINT OUT OF TUBES IN ADVANCE. YOU NEED FRESH PAINT EVERY DAY before starting to paint. SPRITZING WITH WATER WILL NOT WORK!!
