San Cheang

San Cheang traces her roots to the Hong Kong of her childhood. Her earliest and most lasting images of art come from the work of many family members who were artists in the traditional Chinese style of brush painting. Her first training was also in this style. Years later, when she was introduced to Western watercolors, she felt that she had found a medium in which she could truly express herself.

Since leaving Hong Kong at the age of 17, San has traveled extensively: in Asia, Europe, North Africa, and South America. She has resided in Canada, the Eastern and Western United States, finally settling in Texas fifteen years ago. As a result, her work comprise of subjects ranging from the Chinese landscape to the Italian countryside, from the Maine coast to the American Southwest.
She interprets these images with a perspective unique only to one with such a rich cultural background. San’s favorite of many subjects is the landscape, in which, against nature’s grandeur, the minuteness of man is placed in true perspective. She loves art for its meditative aspect as the artist, taking the viewer with her, can escape to a place removed both in space and time.
San holds a Master’s of Health Science degree, but she has never deviated from her passion for painting. She has since left a career in Public Health to pursue art full time. She has conducted classes for both adults and children, and her work has been shown in juried art exhibits.

San is a member of the American Watercolor Society, Texas Watercolor Society, as well as the Southwestern Watercolor Society. She has also been featured in a segment of “The Art of Living Gallery” on Veria TV on the topic of the healing qualities of art.
