Herb Reed

Herb Reed is a co-owner of Artists' Showplace Gallery. His passion for art is the culmination of long held dreams and creative aspirations. Collectors of his transparent watercolors will enjoy getting to know him, and his work, here.

Herb's mother graduated from Parsons School of Design ("about 90 years ago", according to him!) Although she married and poured her energy into her family, she always wanted him to do something with art.

"I still have a number of her watercolor interiors done at school," he recalls. Her passion for art made an indelible impression on him. "She encouraged me to pursue watercolor, but I became an engineer, got married, and got on with life." Life has a way of crowding art out of it!

Raised in Memphis, Tennessee, Herb Reed has lived in Texas practically all of his adult life . "As the saying goes," he chuckles, “I got here as soon as I could.”   Although trained as an electrical engineer, he  spent the last half of his career in corporate public relations and advertising. It was only after he retired that he returned to artistic pursuits, to live out a long-held dream birthed by his mother.

He has also studied with Tony Couch, Jan Hart, Jerry Stitt, Frank Francese, Mel Stabin, Nita Leland, Judy Morris, Jane Stephenson, Catherine Anderson and Carl Dalio.

He finds watercolor illusive and constantly challenging - each painting has its own surprises and gifts. The dynamic range of changing light reflected in the rising and setting sun, is a source of endless fascination for him. Attempting to capture that in watercolor, is a challenge that he takes on with gusto.
