Herb Reed

Herb Reed is a co-owner of Artists' Showplace Gallery. His passion for art is the culmination of long held dreams and creative aspirations. Collectors of his transparent watercolors will enjoy getting to know him, and his work, here. Herb's mother graduated from Parsons School of Design ("about 90 years ago", according to him!) Although she married and poured her energy into her family, she always wanted him to do something with art. "I still have a number of her watercolor interiors done at school," he recalls. Her passion for art made an indelible impression on him. "She encouraged me to pursue watercolor, but I became an engineer, got married, and got on with life." Life has a way of crowding art out of it! | | | After the rain Watercolor, 22x30" Herb Reed | Aspen Sunset Watercolor, 11x30" Herb Reed | Clearing at Dawn Watercolor, 15x22" Herb Reed |
Raised in Memphis, Tennessee, Herb Reed has lived in Texas practically all of his adult life . "As the saying goes," he chuckles, “I got here as soon as I could.” Although trained as an electrical engineer, he spent the last half of his career in corporate public relations and advertising. It was only after he retired that he returned to artistic pursuits, to live out a long-held dream birthed by his mother. | | | Boathouse Key Watercolor, 22x30" Herb Reed | Cliffside Waterfall Collage, 11x30" Herb Reed | Racing the Storm Watercolor, 11x15" Herb Reed |
About eight years ago Herb started studying with Naomi Brotherton, who has had a strong influence on his work. His art education, which began in earnest in 2003, included studying with many other notable professional artists, who are also outstanding art educators. He has also studied with Tony Couch, Jan Hart, Jerry Stitt, Frank Francese, Mel Stabin, Nita Leland, Judy Morris, Jane Stephenson, Catherine Anderson and Carl Dalio. | | | Bank on It Watercolor,11x15" Herb Reed | Golden Butte Watercolor, 15x22" Herb Reed | Luckenbach Watercolor, 15x22" Herb Reed |
Herb prefers painting representational landscapes, but enjoys tackling an occasional still life and portrait. He works primarily in transparent watercolors. | | | Colorado Morning Watercolor, 15x22" Herb Reed | Beach Blow Watercolor, 15x22" Herb Reed | October Docking Watercolor, 15x22" Herb Reed |
He finds watercolor illusive and constantly challenging - each painting has its own surprises and gifts. The dynamic range of changing light reflected in the rising and setting sun, is a source of endless fascination for him. Attempting to capture that in watercolor, is a challenge that he takes on with gusto. | | | Yellow Box Car Watercolor, 15x22" Herb Reed | Angel's Nest at Dusk Watercolor, 15x22" Herb Reed | Edgewood Autumn Watercolor, 15x22" Herb Reed |
Besides being an active owner of Artists's Showplace Gallery, Herb serves in other art organizations. He was the 2008-2009 president of the Southwest Watercolor Society, a 500 member regional organization headquartered in Dallas. He is also active in the Richardson Civic Art Society. He has won numerous awards for his watercolors in local and regional juried shows. Comfortable with change, Herb's career reflects his ability to transition easily from being an electrical engineer, to public relations, and eventually to art. We, at Artists' Showplace Gallery, expect to see continual growth and change in his artistic pursuits, as well. Check back frequently to view his current work, or visit him at one of our Gallery receptions.
